Gather your building supplies. For this project, you are going to need to start with a volcano. A prepackaged paper mache kit is recommended. Next, you need a two-liter bottle of diet cola. Use your paper mache kit to build a mountainous, volcanic structure around the bottle, leaving a hole at the top large enough to facilitate opening the soda bottle. Give your paper mache plenty of time to dry before you attempt the next step, or else you will end up with a sticky mess on your hands.
Paint your volcano. This is where you can get pretty creative, even though most volcanic mountains look pretty much the same. You can go for the standard black and brown color of rocks and dirt, or you can get a little artsy. Why not make a tie-dye themed volcano? It is just a science experiment, and science should be fun! After applying your paint, make sure that it is completely dry before you begin the next stage: Explosion!
Now it is time to add the trigger to the equation. Go to your local convenience store and buy a roll of mint Mentos. It is very important that you buy these in particular, as nothing else will work correctly.
Ready your presentation in a clear, outdoor space (trust me; you do not want this volcano erupting indoors!). Carefully take the cap off your diet cola, which, if you have followed directions, should be housed securely in your paper mache volcano. Commence with a dramatic countdown, and at its conclusion, drop a couple of the Mentos into the cola.

This is a fun experiment to do at school or at home, but if you are planning to attempt it, there are a few safety precautions to take. The reaction of the cola to the mints is very strong, and you definitely do not want to put your face near the opening of the soda bottle for the initial eruption. It is recommended that you wear goggles or some type of protective eyewear if you are going to be the one tossing the mints in the soda. Other than that, enjoy the spectacle!

Podcasting: Everyone is talking about it. But what exactly is it, and how does it work? Simply defined, podcasting is the dissemination of syndicated files, either audio or video in content, over the Web for use on handheld audio/video equipment and computers. The term itself is a combination of two words, “iPod” and “broadcasting.” The word refers to both the file that’s downloaded and the technology to transfer it. Keep in mind that an iPod is not necessary for accessing podcasts. A podcast is also known as an audio subscription service. Listeners can subscribe to and download as many podcasts as they want. As a new method of downloading and transferring information, podcasting is revolutionizing the way we communicate. Podcasts differ from streaming video and audio. Podcasts are usually a continuous series of programs, with many episodes featured in serial format. Podcast subscribers can listen to the content on MP3 players or computers whenever they want. Unlike streaming video, no Internet connection is necessary to review the content of a podcast. But, due to their nature as stored files, podcasts can never be experienced live, in real time – again, unlike streaming video.

Podcasters, or people who create podcasts, have Web sites where their content is available for downloading. Can any old Joe start his own podcast? For better or worse, the answer is yes. All a would-be podcaster has to do is put his files on a web server thats accessible to the public. The file should have an internet address (URI). Podcast files can be any kind of files, from a PDF to a text file. The files can contain audio or video content. The would-be podcaster begins to create a series of files, creating a feed or list of URIs, so the entries in the series can be easily found and downloaded. Each entry is usually accompanied by a date, a title and some kind of content overview. The podcaster links the file to an identifiable place on the web server. This place is usually permanent, and its called the feed URI.

The popularity of these informational feeds has grown astronomically since 2004, when podcasting first became popular among bloggers and software developers. Podcasts cover all sorts of subjects, from technology to politics, to art and literature. Apple made podcasting part of its iTunes package in 2005, and last year, Sony Entertainment released a statement saying that its Play station Portable would be compatible with podcasts.

Now, podcasting has become a part of conventional media. The technology is being used by news stations and newspapers around the world, including The New York Times, The San Francisco Chronicle, the BBC, ABC in Australia, and Sirius satellite radio. Robots- A Raging Fashion In China

It is not unknown that China, the land where Mandarin originated, is now the worlds fastest developing country, striding into an opulent future. Its technological prowess that has even surpassed the US and its monumental space program are some of the fruits of its economic boom. Dont be surprised if China succeeds in creating a futuristic world full of robots, which can only be imagined in science fictions. Remember the Richie Rich comics, where we had Irona, who ran errands for humans? The idea sounds far-fetched and outlandish but the same idea has been applied to one of the restaurants in China, where robot waitresses serve food. Baloney? Hardly!

The Dalu Robot Restaurant in north Chinas Shandong province has been making headlines from the day it came into existence. The staff of this restaurant comprises six waitresses, all of whom are robots. These robots have been manufactured by the Shandong Dalu Science and Technology Company and programmed to serve up to 100 diners along a fixed trajectory. To ensure uninterrupted service, twenty one tables are arranged in circles and diners are served in rotation. If you participate in our study abroad programs and ever, happen to visit this restaurant, the staff will inform you about the robots serving and what one can expect out of their service. Now this is a win-win situation for both the customers and the staff. The staff does not need tips and the customers do not complain. This probably is one of the best examples of technology and humanity, going hand-in-hand.

The Chinese robotic research began in 1980s, when the country was not technologically advanced. The scientists started with the legs of the robots and eventually went on to develop its nervous system, hands and visual aids. The first humanoid robot of China finally got ready in the year 2000. Since then, China never looked back, when it came to the development of robots and the robot culture became so popular amongst the common mass that the country hosted robot Olympics in Harbin, China, in the year 2010. Robots from across the country participated in the competition. They walked, they danced and they ran, winning the hearts of thousands. The Japanese robots can now make sushi and China is not lagging behind either as is evident from the Robot Restaurant.

Chinese robots will soon be carrying out a lot of chores that we usually dont fancy doing such as washing dishes and vacuuming and hoovering the house. In todays world, the robot maids are no more a figment of imagination. The day is not far when each household will have a robot-maid, catering to all our needs and performing all our tedious household chores with equal dexterity and diligence.
